Герб на имя "Blakstok of that Ilk", т.е. вождя Блэкстоков, приводится в Forman-Workman's Roll (ок. 1565-1566), но ни о том, где находилось оригинальное баронство Блэксток, ни о семействе Блэксток из Блэкстока ничего не известно. В связи с тем, что фамилия Блэксток встречается начиная с XVI века и преимущественно в Дамфризшире, есть предположение, что Блэкстоки - это потомки опальных "Черных Дугласoв". После разгрома графов Дугласoв в 1455 году некоторые из их бывших приверженцев по разным причинам: во избежание преследования или для отличия от "Рыжих Дугласoв" - приняли другие фамилии, в том числе, возможно, Блэксток.

Брихины происходили от сэра Генри де Брихина (?-ок.1245) - побочного сына принца Дэвида Шотландского, графа Хантингдона (младшего брата королей Малкольма IV и Вильгельма Льва). Последним из этого рода был сэр Дэвид де Брихин, "Цветок шотландского рыцарства" ("The Flower of Scottish Chivalry"), в прошлом крестоносец, активный участник Войны за независимость на английской стороне. После Баннокберна лорд Брихин перешел на сторону шотландцев, и его печать стоит под Арбротской декларацией, но в августе 1320 года он арестован и казнен как один из организаторов заговора против короля Роберта Брюса (Soules conspiracy of 1320).

 Герб впоследствии использовался как титульный феодального лордства Брихин (Lordship of Brechin).
