 Пиблсшир. Старинное семейство из Пиблсшира и Ланаркшира. Фамилия происходят от названия города и прихода Гован в Ланаркшире (сегодня это один из районов города Глазго), собственно Govan - от гаэльск. ghobhainn - "кузнец" (smith).

Гованы с XIV века владели землями в окрестностях Глазго и Пиблса, в том числе с XVI века до 1685 года землями и башней Кардрона (Cardrona Tower).
