Мидлотиан. Фамилия Ховисон значит "сын Хью" (son of Hugh). Ховисоны из Брэдхэда владели землями недалеко от королевской охотничьей резиденции Крамонд-Реджис (Cramond-Regis) в окрестностях Эдинбурга с 1465 до пресечения рода в 1787 году.

По семейным преданиям в начале XV века родоначальник семейства крестьянин Джон Ховисон спас короля Шотландии Якова I от нападения цыган или разбойников в Крамонд-Реджисе. Работавшие в поле неподалеку от места охоты Ховисон с сыном пришли на помощь королю, оказавшемуся один на один с нападавшими, и цепами избили и прогнали грабителей; затем поднесли королю миску с водой и полотенце, чтобы омыть раны. Два землепашца в одежде 1400 годов, один с цепом, другой с миской и платком, изображались в качестве щитодержателей на гебе Ховисонов, а в последний раз повинность за земли Брэдхэд была исполнена 24 августа 1822 года на торжественном обеде в Эдинбурге, где Уильям Ховисон Кроуфорд из Кроуфердлэнда, наследник Ховисонов по материнской линии, подал королю Великобритании Георгу IV серебряную миску с розовой водой и платок для омовения рук.
