Мортимеры - древний англо-норманнский род, происходивший из Мортемера (Mortemer) в Нормандии, где стоял одноименный замок (Castle of Mortemer). В Англии Мортимерам принадлежали обширные земельные владения на Валлийской границе и в Ирландии и титулы баронов Мортимеров из Вигмора, графов Марч и одно время графов Ольстер. На рубеже XIV-XV веков Мортимеры были даже претендентами на английский трон; род угас в 1425 году, их владения наследовали Йорки.

Шотландская ветвь семейства, старшими в которой были Мортимеры из Фоулиса и Абердора, происходит от Алана де Мортимера, прибывшего в Шотландию в правление Давида I. Последний из Фоулиса, сэр Роджер Мортимер, умер около 1377 года и его владения перешли по наследству к Грэям из Броксмута (впоследствии лордам Грэй, ок.1445), но в Шоландии остались нескольких младших ветвей рода Мортимеров, в том числе Мортимеры из Крэйгевара, которым до 1610 года принадлежало баронство Крэйгевар в Абердиншире.
